As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, the non-governmental organization Zonta Ghana has called for immediate action on the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill (IWD).
According to the organization, the Bill’s passage will help to create a welcoming environment for women, eliminate bias, and increase women’s participation in national development.
“On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2022, we demand a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.” “A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive, and where difference is valued and celebrated,” it said in a statement obtained by the Ghana News Agency.
In accordance with Clause 4 of Article 17 of the 1992 Constitution, the Affirmative Action Bill seeks to encourage efforts to address socio-cultural, political, economic, and educational gender imbalances in the private and public sectors.
Its goal is to promote a progressive increase and active participation of women in public and active life beginning with a minimum of 30% by 2030, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
International Women’s Day is a global celebration of women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It also serves as a rallying cry for women’s equality.
Zonta Ghana expressed concern about the low representation of women in Parliament and called for drastic measures to encourage women to take on leadership positions.
There are only 40 women in parliament out of 275 members.” Women in institutions face challenges moving up the leadership ladder due to gender stereotypes and outright bias.
The organization urged Ghanaians to support the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill in order to accelerate gender equality in governance and private life.
