According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, some Ghanaian students in Ukraine who were supposed to be evacuated have refused to show up.
According to the Ministry, the students who expressed a desire to be evacuated and for whom air tickets were purchased on their behalf did not appear at the airport on the scheduled date.
“The Ministry has taken note with grave concern of some Ghanaian students’ refusal to appear at the airport after expressing their willingness to be evacuated.” As a result, the government has purchased unused airline tickets and paid for COVID-19 tests for people who have no intention of traveling,” the Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.
As a result, it was noted that only Ghanaians willing to be evacuated should confirm their participation in order to avoid wasting public funds.
It went on to say that the government would only cover the cost of two nights’ hotel accommodation for Ghanaians who are received by its staff and representatives and lodged in hotels in Ukraine and other European countries.
It also warned that the government’s obligations to those who decline the offer to be assisted in returning home would end when the two nights’ hotel accommodation expired.
According to the statement, 181 Ghanaians have successfully returned home from Ukraine.
It was also noted that some Ghanaians who had been stranded in Sumy, near the Russian border, had begun their journey to Myrhorod.
The government also thanked the various National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in the region, as well as the Church of Pentecost and other Religious Bodies, Governments, Humanitarian Organizations, and individuals who helped make the evacuation possible.
