The Cape Coast Stadium, which will host Ghana’s first leg Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifying play-off match against Nigeria on March 25, is currently in poor condition and undergoing rehabilitation, The PUNCH has learned.
The stadium’s football pitch was used as the venue for the government’s celebration of the country’s 65th anniversary of independence on March 6, but the pitch has yet to be resurfaced after being badly damaged during the celebrations.
Social media images showed holes in the pitch, while others showed that work was still being done.
According to Ghanaian media, the pitch’s condition may necessitate the game being moved to another location in Accra or Kumasi.
Ghana Football Association had previously requested permission from the Confederation of African Football to move the game to a different stadium.
Meanwhile, Asante Forkuo, a Ghanaian journalist who visited the stadium on Wednesday, tweeted, “This is the state of Cape Coast Stadium today following Sunday’s Independence Anniversary.” “I am confident that it will be ready for the Ghana vs. Nigeria World Cup Qualifier.”
