Kwabena Agyapong, a former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says he intends to lead the party into the 2024 presidential elections.
According to him, he has previously run for NPP leadership and may do so again.
“I believe I will make an excellent president.” I am confident in my ability to complete the task. “Even when I was young, I thought it was appropriate to give it a try; I’d tried it before,” he explained.
In an interview with Ayisha Ibrahim on PM Express Personality Profile, he stated, “There’s nothing I can rule out, but now is not the time to discuss [because] we are in the second year of a second term.” There will be approximately 200,000 delegates voting, so it will not be an easy thing to swing.
“I am someone whose record in this Party is one of longstanding, dedicated service, dating back to the Adu Boahene era, through Kufuor, Akufo-Addo, and Alan Kyeramanten… So I think it’s a matter of public record, and the Party people know who I am and what I’ve done for the Party,” he explained.
Meanwhile, he has warned members of the Party who want to succeed the incumbent leader to be cautious.
“What is important for me as a politician and as a party is that we do not disrespect the mandate that we have; we have a mandate to rule the country right now, and I believe that all of us, true patriots, should be focused on assisting the government in fulfilling that mandate.”
“We shouldn’t come across as if we prefer campaigning to governing.” Unfortunately, some of our coworkers are making that kind of depressing impression. “The most important thing for us as a political party right now is to win the trust of the Ghanaian people,” he warned.
Kwabena Agyapong was the NPP’s General Secretary until he was suspended in 2015 for misconduct, but the suspension was lifted in 2021.
