President Nana Akufo-Addo has stated unequivocally that a coup is not a cure-all for Ghana’s economic woes.
He emphasized that coups have never been and will never be an appropriate solution to the nation’s political, economic, and institutional challenges.
The President made the remarks at the 92nd anniversary celebration of St Augustine’s College in Cape Coast.
President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that the majority of Ghanaians committed to democratic values will continue to resist coup plotters, stating that his administration will use all legitimate means to protect the nation’s integrity.
“This has recently resulted in some irresponsible pronouncements about coups as a panacea for our problem.” I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: coups have never been and will never be long-term solutions to the political, economic, and security challenges that our nations and continents face.”
“I am confident that the vast majority of Ghanaians who are committed to democratic values and democratic institutions will continue to resist coup plotters’ advances, and those of us who have the responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the state will implore all legitimate means in a democracy to preserve our free open system of government that respects human rights, the rule of law, and democratic accountability principles.”
The President mentioned Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) and emphasized its importance in the country’s development.
He maintained that the strategy is to strengthen the link between education and industry by expanding Technical and Vocational Education at the secondary and tertiary levels.
President Akufo-Addo hoped that the intervention in the TVET sector would create job opportunities for the country’s youth.
