The Peoples Democratic Party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, stated Thursday in Abuja that the party will not abandon its tradition of zoning political offices in the 2023 elections.
Ayu stated that whoever does not win the presidency this time should wait until the next President’s term ends.
The Chairman made the remarks while launching the party’s 37-member zoning committee at its national secretariat in Abuja.
The PDP formed a zoning committee following its 95th National Executive Council meeting on March 16 to make recommendations for the zoning of various elective positions prior to the elections.
The committee, which had two weeks to draft the hallowed list, is expected to submit its final zoning list on March 30.
The chairman told delegates on Thursday, “PDP has a history of rotating our offices.” Anyone who doesn’t get it this time should wait until the next president takes office.
“Once we begin this journey, we believe the PDP will produce the next President.” We’ll make sure it happens again this time. And it will revolve around justice, fairness, and Nigeria’s best interests.
He urged committee members to remain open to dialogue and work to resolve disagreements amicably, noting that the same attitude led to the committee’s successful NEC meeting last week.
“You will recall that there was no rancor whatsoever in the NEC meeting discussions,” Ayu says. I implore you all to keep the same spirit. The PDP has a reputation for debating whatever issues we have. We talk, we don’t fight, and we solve problems.
“There is no problem too difficult or too important for the PDP to solve.” That is the party’s spirit. As a result, I urge all of you to discuss this matter in the same spirit that you did at the NEC. Let us avoid all rancor and, at the end of the day, stay focused on the main goal.”
While noting that the party’s primary goal is to win power in 2023, Ayu stated that by the end of May 2022, the PDP would present a presidential candidate Nigerians can be proud of.
“I believe that by the time we get the big prize, we will share it and rotate it the way we want,” he said.
