Cristiano Ronaldo has posted an Instagram statement following an incident following Everton’s 1-0 win over Manchester United.
As his beaten team departed the pitch at full time earlier this afternoon, video footage circulating on social media claimed to show the Red Devils star knocking an object – seemingly a cell phone – out of the hands of a spectator.
Taking to Instagram this evening in an apparent message over what happened, the Portugal international wrote: “It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing. Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game. I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship.”
Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United has apologized on social media after a “outburst.”
The ECHO met with Sarah Kelly of Upton, who accompanied her 14-year-old son Jake Harding to Goodison Park today for the first time to see his beloved Blues.
“With a terrible, awful fury,” she added, Ronaldo “walked past, smacked the phone out of my son’s hand, and continued going.” Jake, who is autistic and has dyspraxia, was “very shocked” by the occurrence, according to Sarah.
“We can confirm that we are talking with Manchester United Football Club and Everton FC after complaints of an alleged assault at the Everton v Manchester United football match today (Saturday 9 April 2022),” a Merseyside Police spokeswoman informed the ECHO.
“At 2.30 p.m., it was reported that a kid was assaulted by a member of the away team as they were leaving the pitch.
“Officers are presently working with Everton Football Club to analyse CCTV material and conduct thorough witness interviews in order to determine if an infraction has occurred.
“Anyone with information on this incident should contact the Merseyside Police social media department through Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police Contact centre, referencing reference number 228 of 9 April 2022.”
