An alleged assault is being investigated by Merseyside Police after Manchester United player Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to break a fan’s phone.
The video was published on social media, along with claims that he shattered the device as he walked off the pitch after his team’s 1-0 loss to Everton.
Ronaldo, 37, then issued an apology over social media.
On Saturday, Merseyside Police confirmed they were looking into “claims of an alleged assault” at Goodison Park.
They were in contact with both Manchester United and Everton, according to a representative.
At 2.30 p.m., it was reported that a boy was assaulted by a member of the away team as they were leaving the pitch,” they stated.
“Investigations are ongoing, and officers are currently working with Everton to analyze CCTV material and conduct lengthy witness interviews to determine whether an infraction has occurred.”
“Anyone with information about this incident should contact Merseyside Police via Twitter MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police contact centre, referencing reference number 228 of 9 April 2022.”
Manchester United confirmed that they were aware of “an alleged incident” and that they would “cooperate with any police investigations.”
United’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League were harmed by the defeat, which came against an Everton side that was one point above the relegation zone before kick-off.
“It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult situations like the one we’re in,” Portugal’s Ronaldo stated.
“However, we must always be respectful, tolerant, and set an example for all the young people who enjoy this wonderful game.”
“As a gesture of fair play and sportsmanship, I would like to invite this supporter to witness a game at Old Trafford.”
