WizKid, Burna Boy, Tems, and Mr Eazi were among the top five exported local artistes from Nigeria on Spotify, according to her.
Nigeria is the second most musically streamed country after Pakistan, according to Spotify, an internet streaming company.
Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, said this during a press conference in Lagos on Thursday.
Ms Okumu said the study was conducted by Spotify and that Kenya came in third place.
WizKid, Burna Boy, Tems, and Mr Eazi were among the top five exported local artistes from Nigeria on Spotify, according to her.
She claimed that Nigerians have been on a discovery journey as a result of Spotify’s arrival in the country in recent years.
“According to Spotify’s research, the average number of artists streamed per user in the United States has increased by 60%.
“Since the market’s inception, creators have added 20,935 songs to the Spotify platform.” Nigeria is the country with the second-highest number of streams, behind Pakistan, with Kenya in third place.
“Data also revealed that nine of Nigeria’s top ten exported songs are collaborations between local and foreign hit producers, demonstrating that Nigerian music is getting global notice and popularity,” she added.
According to her, 30% of the Nigerian Alte genre is now being streamed in the United States, with a 200 percent increase in recent years.
She pointed out that over 40% of Nigerian Afropop is streamed in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.
She claimed that the streaming app aided in the discovery of new music and podcasts by providing a completely personalized experience.
According to her, Spotify has unearthed, managed, and shared over 82 million tunes for free or through Spotify Premium for subscribers.
“Africa is one of the world’s fastest expanding music marketplaces, and African music genres are today more popular and accepted globally than ever before.”
“Given the region’s diverse range of musical styles and sounds, this is unsurprising.
“Afropop, afrobeats, gengetone, amapiano, and other genres are influencing the sounds of artists that are sweeping the globe.”
“Earlier this year, Spotify announced the addition of Nigeria to its list of more than 80 new foreign markets. “Spotify is a critical market for the West African country, since it is swiftly becoming Africa’s biggest success story in the music space,” she said.
