Arsenal missed an opportunity to narrow the gap on the top four as Southampton won 1-0 thanks to Jan Bednarek’s first-half goal and an exceptional performance from goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
Arsenal has now lost each of their previous three Premier League games, including Saturday’s defeat.
Just before half-time, Southampton took their chance when defender Jan Bednarek swept high past Aaron Ramsdale.
“We had so much power, we created scenarios, but the end result was not nice,” Arteta explained.
To win games, you must score goals. I’m not sure what more to say. The boys played the way they had to play, but things are defined in the box.”
Watford, who are currently bottom of the table, are on the verge of relegation after suffering their tenth consecutive home league defeat at the hands of Brentford.
After Emmanuel Dennis had cancelled out Christian Norgaard’s opener, Pontus Jansson scored the winner deep into stoppage time for the Bees.
Watford, who are now in second place, are six points away of safety with six games remaining.
