The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) claims that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) can only win the 2024 elections with a new presidential candidate, but the office of former President John Dramani Mahama says it is unconcerned.
In its five-year assessment on Ghana, the EIU anticipated that the NDC will win in 2024, but urged the party to choose a candidate other than John Mahama to boost its chances.
In an interview with Citi News, a special assistant to the former President, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, stated that the former president’s decision to run is based on a clarion call from the party’s rank and file.
“I think people are tired of hearing about willful corruption and misappropriation of public finances, and I think they believe President Mahama deserves more than anything to come into office and finish the job he started,” she said.
Mr. Mahama, who led the NDC to two election setbacks in 2016 and 2020, should be replaced to re-energize the party and strengthen its prospects, according to the report.
“In 2024, the next parliamentary and presidential elections will be held. Mr. Akufo-Addo, the current president, is not eligible to seek for a third term due to constitutional term limits. Former President John Mahama is allegedly considering running again, but the opposition NDC is expected to try to revive its prospects with a new candidate, according to the EIU.
“Our baseline assumption is that public unhappiness with the slow pace of government improvements—such as infrastructure development, job creation, and corruption reduction—will spark anti-incumbency forces, prompting voters to seek a change.” As a result, the NDC has a realistic probability of winning the 2024 elections,” according to the EIU research.
