Mane made history with his goal against Villarreal in the second leg of their semi-final match on Tuesday night. His goal in the game gave him 15 Champions League goals in the knockout stage, breaking Didier Drogba’s record of 14 for Liverpool. Mane reached the landmark after playing a key role in Liverpool’s incredible comeback triumph over Villarreal in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final showdown on Tuesday night, May 3.
The Reds have one foot firmly in the final of the European competition after winning the opening leg 2-0 at Anfield.
Villarreal, on the other hand, came close to causing a scare in the return leg, going 2-0 up in the first half.
The Premier League heavyweights, though, turned the tie back in their favor with a strong second-half display.
In the 62nd minute, Fabinho equalized for the visitors, before Luis Diaz equalized five minutes later. Liverpool raced to a 3-2 triumph and a 5-2 aggregate victory to reach the final, with Mane completing the turnaround in the 74th minute.
Didier Drogba’s record is broken by Sadio Mane. Mane’s goal earned him a place in history, according to Goal, as he became Africa’s greatest goalscorer in the Champions League knockout rounds.
That record has been held by Didier Drogba, thanks to his illustrious Chelsea tenure.
After scoring in the first leg of their tie with Villarreal, Mane equaled Drogba’s 14-goal record. His goal in Spain, though, was enough to propel him over the Ivorian football great with 15 goals.
