If given the chance to serve as President in 2023, Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation, has committed to address insecurity and prioritize education.
On Friday, Amaechi paid a visit to the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, in his palace in Benin City, Edo State’s capital.
After serving as Speaker of the Rivers State Assembly twice and Chairman of the Nigeria Speakers Forum, the former Rivers State Governor stated he has the experience to improve the country.
“These two were significant focuses among others like transportation, roads, and agriculture during my stint as governor of Rivers State, and I aim to duplicate the same if given the opportunity to serve the country as president,” he stated.
He pledged that the coastal rail bill, which would run from Lagos to Calabar, would pass via Benin, and that there would be another one running from Onitsha to Benin, which would see the light of day once the contracts were finalized and appropriate monies were available.
Oba Ewuare II, in response, urged Amaechi not to forget his commitment to the electorate if he is elected president.
He described a situation in which political office holders, particularly governors, treat traditional rulers shabbily only to seek support from the same royal fathers during elections, adding that adolescents should be catered for to reduce campaign violence.
“I beg that when you inevitably succeed, please do not forget the royal father and the young ones so that there will be less bloodshed in politics,” the monarch urged.
