On Wednesday, the Labour Party made history by becoming the first political party to choose a presidential candidate for the 2023 election.
Sampson Uchenna Charles, a petroleum businessman who was represented by Aminu Bello, the Deputy National Youth Leader of his Campaign Organization, submitted his application to the LP’s headquarters, promising to “radically transform national security architecture” and “settle all labor disputes in Nigeria.”
Many supporters accompanied him to the party secretariat in Abuja to submit the form as part of the party’s nomination and expression of interest procedures for the presidency.
Charles, who handed up his N30 million form to the Labour Party’s Chairman, Julius Abure, said Nigeria deserved the best from her administration, not a wave of insecurity and protracted labor disputes that had harmed the country’s human resources. The Charles Presidential Campaign Organization’s Director-General,
Dr. Damsump Danjuma, who delivered a speech on his behalf, stated that he would dramatically change Nigeria’s security architecture to benefit the people.
“I humbly urge you, our comrades, to ensure that our votes count in the 2023 elections and that the Labour Party remains our preferred candidate,” he stated.
“Every labor dispute involving Nigerians and employees will be treated with the utmost care and honesty by the LP government.” Our security and intelligence architecture will undergo significant changes. I would secure proper remuneration and welfare for Nigerian workers, as well as accelerate the overhaul of our decade’s infrastructure, including power, roads, and railways, in order to boost national economic and entrepreneurial drives. I intend to modernize our agricultural system and promote the family in order to strengthen the value chain. I would also change our educational system to match the needs of Nigeria and to compete on a global scale. Above all, creating work opportunities for our teeming youth, graduates, and artisans shall be our primary goal.
Given the weak leadership system that has resulted in deterioration of infrastructure, security, and the economy, Abure claimed that Nigeria was already in disarray.
All of this, he added, has compromised the mandate of Chapter 2 of the Nigerian constitution, which mandated the government with providing excellent welfare for the people and improving living conditions, which he said has completely collapsed since the APC government has failed.
According to Abure, the contender has met all of the party’s requirements to be its presidential candidate, who will be elected at the party’s presidential primary in June.
