Northern governors urge Sokoto residents to be calm.
Following the blasphemy-related assassination of Miss Deborah Samuel, a student at Sokoto’s Shehu Shagari College of Education, the Northern Governors Forum has urged for calm.
Simon Lalong, the chairman of the forum and governor of Plateau State, made the appeal in Jos through his spokesperson, Dr Makut Macham.
“The governors are concerned about the development,” he said, “since it is clearly an extrajudicial way of dealing with perceived transgression.”
Following reports of a peaceful rally being hijacked and then turning violent, leading to the imposition of a curfew in Sokoto, the northern governors have appealed for calm.
The forum expressed its condolences to the victim’s family and requested that security agencies conduct a thorough investigation.
It also expressed regret for the tragedy and praised Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State for taking decisive measures to restore normalcy.
The governors expressed their sympathy and prayers in dealing with the situation, promising to take all necessary steps to prevent a repeat in any area of the country.
The forum also emphasized the importance of northerners and Nigerians showing love, tolerance, and respect for one another, regardless of faith, ethnicity, or other connections.
