Despite a season marred by injuries, Nigerian star Asisat Oshoala defeated Real Madrid’s Geyse to win the Pichichi trophy for the league’s top scorer in the 2021/22 Women’s Spanish Primera Division, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Oshoala concluded the season as the league’s top scorer with 20 goals, ahead of Geyse (19) and teammates Lieke Martens and Alexia Putellas, who each had 17 goals.
The former Super Falcons captain was instrumental in Barcelona’s third consecutive Liga title and seventh overall, winning all 30 of their games in the season that finished on Sunday.
The striker lost a significant portion of the season (four months) due to injury, but her strong start kept her in contention for the prestigious title.
After winning the Pichichi on Sunday, Oshoala became the third Barcelona player to win the trophy since its debut in 2005, following Sonia Bermdez and Jennifer Hermoso.
Sonia has won the prize four times, but Hermoso has won it five times in a row.
After Mexican Charlyn Corral, Oshoala became the second non-Spanish player to win the Golden Boot award in the 2017/18 season.
Another Nigerian forward, Rasheedat Ajibade, had a memorable season, scoring 10 goals to assist Atletico Madrid finish fourth on the table.
