Akinwumi Adesina, the president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has stated that his work at the bank prevents him from running for president.
Last Monday, a support group acquired and submitted for him the N100 million All Progressives Congress Presidential form.
Nigerians have been waiting for his response since then.
In a statement obtained by Vanguard, the top banker expressed gratitude for his supporters’ efforts, kindness, and sacrifices, saying he is “fully engaged and committed to the mission that Nigeria, Africa, and all non-shareholders of the African Development Bank have given me for Africa’s development.”
“I have been tremendously humbled by various appeals from Nigerians at home and abroad that I should consider running for President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement continues.
“I am deeply moved by people who have gone to such lengths, and made such enormous sacrifices, on their own volition, to deem me worthy of attention.
The youth, women, farmers, physically handicapped, and well-intentioned Nigerians who have done so have expressed their true free will, political right, freedom of expression, and association for my consideration, with Nigeria’s best interests at heart.
“While I am profoundly honored, humbled, and appreciative for all of the amazing generosity, love, and trust, my current commitments do not allow me to accept consideration at this time.”
I am entirely devoted to the mission for Africa’s development that Nigeria, Africa, and other non-shareholders of the African Development Bank have given me.
“I remain totally committed to my aim of assisting Africa’s rapid development and economic integration.”
