On Saturday, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed his disappointment with China’s plans to develop territories in the East China Sea, calling them “unacceptable.”
He told reporters in Kyoto, Japan’s western capital, that the government has filed a diplomatic complaint against China.
On Friday, Japan’s foreign ministry issued a statement acknowledging China’s increased efforts to develop natural resources in the East China Sea, including areas west of the midway between the two countries.
A dispute over minor islands in the East China Sea, which Japan governs but which China also claims, and the waters surrounding them is one source of long-standing friction between the world’s second and third largest economies.
