Mercy Eke, the winner of Big Brother Naija Season 4, has responded to those who mock her for her Igbo accent.
Mercy explained why she speaks with an Igbo accent in an interview with media personality Taymesan, which was published on Friday.
The reality TV personality from Imo explained that she was born and raised in Owerri, the state capital, and that this has influenced her accent.
“I was born in the city of Owerri. Everything was completed in Owerri. In truth, Mercy stated, “I left Owerri in 2016.”
“I’m the last child,” she remarked when asked about her upbringing. With the aid of my mother, I attended school in Owerri. I graduated from high school. I completed the task at hand. In 2016, I left Owerri.”
“I’m saying this because some folks don’t have a clue.” I look at them and reply, “How do you want me to speak?” when they mention my Igbo accent.
“I attended basic and high school in Owerri. I just left Owerri because of the National Youth Service. What are they expecting me to say?”
She did add, though, that she would not be touched by what others said about her because of her uniqueness.
“This is me,” the entrepreneur explained. I’m sure of myself. This is my name. I’ve seen a lot of people and met a lot of them.
“And most of the world’s top people, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, how do they speak?” With a foreign accent or in his native tongue. And he’s the most well-known person on the planet. “Everyone adores him.”
Mercy, on the other hand, claims many Nigerians want her to talk with a British accent, but she insists on remaining unique.
