After Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed worries about Tunisia’s democracy, the foreign ministry of Tunisia reported on Friday that it had summoned a representative from the American embassy.
According to a statement from the foreign ministry, Othman Jerandi, the foreign minister of Tunisia, told Natasha Franceschi, the acting U.S. chargé d’affaires, that the remark amounted to an unacceptable “intervention in the country internal affairs.”
After President Kais Saied unveiled a new constitution handing himself significantly more power on Thursday, Blinken highlighted concerns about Tunisia’s democracy, but the general response among Western democracies was subdued.
