At the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Team Nigeria on Saturday rose to sixth place in the medal standings, according to SUNDAY PUNCH.
Nigeria trailed South Africa at the end of Day 8 of the Games on Friday, finishing in eighth place with a total of nine gold, eight silver, and thirteen bronze medals for a total of 30 medals on Day 9.
For Team Nigeria, Njideka Iyiazi and Ugochi Alarm won gold and bronze in the Women’s F56/57 Para Shot Put competition.
Iyiazi took first place with a throw of 10.03 meters, and Ugochi took third with a throw of 9.38 meters.
Ebikewenimo Welson, a two-time silver medalist at the Commonwealth Games, won the men’s freestyle 57kg wrestling event’s silver medal after falling to India’s Kumar Ravi in the championship match.
After that, Ogbonna John won the bronze medal in the men’s 74 kg freestyle. In the bronze medal match, he triumphed over Englishman Charlie Bowling.
In boxing and para table tennis, Cynthia Ogunsemilore and Faith Obazuaye each took home a bronze medal.
In the Women’s Para Table Tennis competition, Obazuaye defeated Felicity Pickard of England 3-1 to claim bronze, while Cynthia Ogunsemilore settled for bronze after losing to Any Broadhurst of Northern Ireland 5-0 in the semifinals.
Hannah Reuben also took home silver in the women’s 76kg division in wrestling.
Isau Ogunkunle won another bronze medal for Nigeria in the men’s singles classes 3-5 Para Table competition by defeating Raj Alagar by a score of 3-0.
In boxing, Onyekwere Innocent took home the bronze medal in the super heavy weight (92+ kg) division, while Esther Oshoba advanced to the women’s over 54–57 kg featherweight final with a victory against Australian Tina Rahimi. Using a split decision, Oshoba won the semifinal match 4-1.
