When the January transfer market opens, Memphis Depay may very well be leaving Barcelona.
The summer transfer of the Netherlands international to Juventus almost didn’t happen due to a number of factors. The 28-year-old has had a very difficult time finding game time this season due to his prolonged absence. He has also been sidelined for more than a month due to an injury, and the Catalan giants reportedly fear that he is prioritizing getting healthy for the FIFA World Cup, which is why his recovery process is taking longer than anticipated.
Given his diminished role in the team and the fact that his contract expires at the end of the season, Barça would be willing to approve a transfer in January.
While it is rumored that Juventus is resuming its pursuit of Depay, another Italian team might join the fray.
Depay has offered to play for Jose Mourinho’s team, and Calciomercato reports that AS Roma might be one of his possible destinations.
Although it wasn’t a particularly memorable experience for him, the Dutchman is familiar with Mourinho from their time together at Manchester United.
However, according to the source, Depay’s team held lengthy discussions with Roma during the summer transfer window but were unable to reach a deal.
The forward has offered himself to the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League winners, but the Giallorossi are aware of his interest in leaving and will consider signing him.
Just one goal has been scored by Depay this season in just three appearances for Barcelona. The dynamic forward has missed nine Blaugrana games since suffering a thigh injury while on international duty in late September.
Roma’s decision to pursue the acquisition of Depay is still up in the air, as their current focus is reportedly improving the defense.
