Antonio Guterres, the secretary general of the UN, has bemoaned the organization’s inability to stop the conflict between Russia and its neighbor, Ukraine.
The UN Security Council, which has been paralyzed by Russia’s veto power, has been “a very significant source of inefficiency” for the war in Ukraine, according to Guttteres.
Because Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the UN has been powerless to stop the war in Ukraine.
Nevertheless, according to Guterres, the conflict “demonstrated the great worth of humanitarian efforts spearheaded by the UN.”
The UN secretary general stated at a news conference that “the UN is probably the only forum that was able to seriously communicate to both parties to try and address not the war sadly but some specific concerns that have significant repercussions at the global level.”
A grain agreement between Russia and Ukraine that was mediated by the UN in July permitted Ukrainian grain to reach global markets, preventing a further increase in food prices.
The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, claims that Ukrainian troops are moving forward in certain areas of the Donbas and making modest progress in others as Guttteres makes his announcement.
In his nightly video message, Zelenskyy stated, “On the whole, we are holding our positions.”
Additionally, there are some parts of the front where we are making some progress.
He continued by saying that Ukraine had improved its anti-aircraft capabilities and would do so even more in the coming year in order to defend both itself and the entire European Union.
