El DeBarge, the singer of “Rhythm of the Night,” was detained following a run-in with the law at a gas station.
According to TMZ, the musician was placed in handcuffs about 3:40 AM on January 8 after police officers who spotted him stop at a gas station and noted his expired tags alerted them to his presence.
It was reported that when they got close, they noticed a visible expandable metal baton in El’s car.
Police searched the car further after realizing the baton was an illegal weapon, finding pepper spray and what they believe to be drugs.
The singer was detained and jailed on numerous counts, including possession of a leaded cane or baton, possession of a prohibited substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The singer is also alleged to not have a valid driver’s license.
It’s believed that the narcotic found in his automobile is heroin. DeBarge is scheduled to return to court in March after posting a $25k bond.
