Jose Mourinho, the manager of Roma, claims he declined the chance to take over as Portugal’s next head coach.
The 59-year-old said that he was the Portuguese Football Federation’s top pick for the position.
Before Roberto Martinez was hired, Mourinho disclosed that PFP president Fernando Gomes had contacted him.
According to the former manager of Manchester United and Chelsea, he “decided not to go.”
“I’m proud that the FPF president indicated that although I wasn’t his first pick, I was his only choice.
“However, I chose not to go. What counts is that I’m here, according to Mourinho.
Fernando Santos, who led Portugal to the 2022 World Cup, is replaced by Martinez.
Santo notoriously had a disagreement with captain Cristiano Ronaldo and benched him for the team’s final two games of the competition.
