A supporter of Vladimir Putin claimed on Sunday that the delivery of offensive weapons to Kyiv that pose a threat to Russian territory will trigger a worldwide disaster and render the case against the use of WMDs moot.
The speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament, the Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, issued a warning that the world is heading toward “a horrific war” as a result of NATO and the United States support for Ukraine.
Volodin said on the Telegram messaging app that if Washington and NATO nations give weapons that will be used to attack civilian populations and try to capture our lands as they threaten, this would result in retaliation measures using more potent weapons.
“Arguments that the nuclear powers have not previously used weapons of mass destruction in local conflicts are untenable. Because these states did not face a situation where there was a threat to the security of their citizens and the territorial integrity of the country.”
Last week, Western allies offered billions of dollars worth of arms for Ukraine, but they were unable to convince Berlin to waive its veto on supplying German-made Leopard combat tanks, which are now in the hands of several NATO countries but whose transfer to Ukraine needs Berlin’s consent.
Russia has seized control of portions of Ukraine and declared it will never give them back since the invasion in February, which it has justified as defending itself against an aggressive West. Restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity is not negotiable, according to Kyiv.
