Arne Espeel, a Belgian goalie who was competing for Winkel Sport B, passed away during a game.
Immediately after saving a penalty against Westrozebeke in Sint-Eloois-Winkel, West Flanders Province, the 25-year-old goalie fainted on the field.
Emergency personnel rushed onto the field to use a defibrillator to try to revive the goalkeeper, but it was too late.
Espeel’s demise was confirmed not long after he was brought to the hospital.
In a statement, the team expressed its regret and loss and offered its condolences to the player’s friends and family.
“Winkel Sport is in very deep mourning at the sudden passing of goalkeeper Arne Espeel,” the club stated.
