Following a confrontation with manager Urs Fischer, Union Berlin has suspended David Datro Fofana, a Chelsea loanee, for one week.
refused to shake hands with Fischer following the Napoli match; the 20-year-old is on loan from Chelsea to Union.
When Fofana was brought on during Union’s Champions League match against Napoli (a 1-0 loss for the squad), he declined to shake Fischer’s hand. According to Sky Sport reporter Lisa de Ruiter, the Ivorian forward received a one-week ban from the club as a result of the snub, which seems to have had major ramifications for him.
Fofana wrote: “Following my behaviour during my exit from the field, I wanted to apologise to the club, the coach, my teammates and the supporters.” After signing a season-long loan from Chelsea, Fofana joined the Bundesliga team in the summer and made 11 appearances across all competitions. He immediately established himself in the starting lineup.
Even though Fofana has apologized on social media for his actions during his exit from the field, head coach Fischer evidently does not think highly of the 20-year-old after giving him a ban.
Although some supporters may view it as a harsh penalty for Fofana’s handshake snub, Fischer places a high importance on discipline, so if the young player returns to the first team with even more attention and discipline, it will undoubtedly be seen as a wise choice. Expect to see the Ivorian back in action when Union hosts Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
