According to veteran Nigerian actor Chinedu Ikedieze, often known as Aki, enthusiastic Gen Z artists invented the social media term in an effort to establish superiority.
According to him, Gen Z actors are always attempting to project an image of themselves as “the best” and “Hollywood standard.”
In an interview with actress Toke Makinwa for the TeaTalk podcast, Ikedieze stated, “There’s this thing called Old Nollywood and New Nollywood.” It is ludicrous.I believe that Nollywood’s Gen Zs are attempting to convey a sense of, “Oh! The newest are us. The Hollywood norms are who we are. We are superior. We are fully knowledgeable.
Comedian Bovi, who was also a guest on the program, took issue with him.
“They’re not the only ones [Gen Z]. Permit me to share one commonality with you. Though let me focus on the entertainment sector, I believe it’s a general issue in Nigeria. Older people have a tendency to despise newcomers. “Who’s this?” would be their reaction. I have experience in this field. I’m the aunt. She simply stopped by to say hello. Who is this man? He lacks self-control. How long have you been doing this for, does he know?
That’s what they [older actors] have been doing. Many of us can relate to you [Ikedieze] because you welcomed us into the industry when we first started. However, the pricks who exist these days… We’ve met them. And they seem so cool now.
“So, the Old Nollywood, there are a lot of them who have seniority complexes, it’s not just a Gen Z thing,” Bovi stated.
