On Wednesday, a Barcelona court granted release to former Brazil defender Dani Alves, contingent upon his payment of a €1 million charge.
Alves was given a four-and-a-half year prison sentence after being found guilty of sexual assault in February; he had already completed more than a year of his sentence.
Following a hearing on Tuesday, the 40-year-old was set free until the appeal’s final outcome was determined. His attorney, Ines Guardiola, filed an appeal of the decision.
Alves will only be required to turn in his Brazilian and Spanish passports, stay in Spain, and consent to weekly court appearances.
In addition, he is subject to a restraining order that forbids him from approaching his victim, her residence, her place of employment, or any other location she is known to visit, at a distance of 1,000 meters.
The victim’s attorneys, the prosecution, and the defense have three days to file an appeal of Wednesday’s decision.
