Some residents of Appiate have welcomed the government’s 6 million dollar fine of Maxam Company for its role in the Appiate explosion disaster.
The residents, feeling justice has been served them, applauded the government for its intervention since the incident happened on January 20, 2022.
Speaking to Citi News, Benjamin Gyasi, a resident of Appiate said it is good news that the government has taken this step towards helping them.
“We appreciate whatever the government has been doing, and is doing for us. Without their support, we would have been more miserable. If the government deems it fit to fine the company this amount to help build back the community and support us, we welcome it with open arms.”
They however hope the government will apply it to the benefit of victims and displaced persons of Appiate.
Speaking on whether they would want the monies shared amongst the residents, he said, “We feel the government knows what is best. The government knows some have lost their families and livelihoods, hence, they will put good measures in place to help the people of Appiate”.
On January 20, 2022, an explosion happened on the Bogoso-Apiate road in the Western Region where a fuel tanker caught fire and subsequently exploded, killing 13 people and leaving many others injured and misplaced.
Misplaced residents have been camped at centres receiving support from government and private individuals.
