Armed men detonated dynamite bombs at police stations and freed detained suspects.
Following the deadly attacks, President Muhammadu Buhari stated that the government is reviewing the security situation in the country’s south-east region.
He condemned the weekend raids on police facilities and the home of the regional leader of a socio-cultural group.
According to a police spokesman, four of the attackers were killed during a gun battle with police.
President Buhari described the violence as “deeply distressing,” adding that security forces were working to restore normalcy to the region.
He didn’t go into detail about the new strategies his government would employ.
The police blame the violence on the separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob).
In addition, the attackers set fire to the residence of the leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an Igbo socio-cultural union.
The group, which advocates for a regional breakaway state, has denied involvement in previous attacks but has yet to comment on the latest violence.
In the last year, the region has seen an increase in deadly violence, with suspected separatists primarily targeting security facilities and personnel.
