THE LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT has stated that plans have been put in place to protect and exploit groundwater as a means of addressing water sector challenges.
Nurudeen Shodeinde, Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, revealed this on Tuesday at a seminar commemorating the 2022 World Water Day in Lagos.
Shodeinde, who was represented by Mahmood Adebite, Director of Drainage Enforcement and Compliance, stated that the 2022 theme, ‘Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible,’ emphasizes the importance of groundwater to human sustenance.
“The campaign’s message is that protecting and sustainably exploiting groundwater is critical to surviving and adapting in a changing world and its environment, as well as meeting the needs of a rapidly growing population.”
“The various perspectives we are hearing today demonstrate the multidimensional value of groundwater across sectors, particularly in a state like ours with its unique blend of aquatic and human interaction.”
“In recognition of the need for a firm institutional arrangement in the water sector, the current administration led by Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu re-designated the former Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.”
Our regulation of this sector is based on inclusivity, the development of technical expertise and technology, and the creation of a robust structure capable of capitalizing on opportunities both locally and globally, as well as addressing sector challenges.”
Omolanke Taiwo, Director of, Water Resources Department, stated that the ministry would collaborate with researchers to review water policies.
“In terms of groundwater management research, the ministry is collaborating with the Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geology Departments at the University of Lagos,” she said. “The ministry also welcomes all studies and research in data gathering that can assist the state in policy making, particularly in the ongoing review of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene policy.”
Mrs Nambam Michaels, a representative of WaterAid Nigeria, called for concerted efforts to effectively manage groundwater in an increasingly competitive environment so that people’s health and means of livelihood are not jeopardized.
