The excitement surrounding the much-anticipated West African derby between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Ghana’s Black Stars appears to have made its way into Parliament.
Later tonight, the Black Stars will compete against Nigeria’s Super Eagles for a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
On Friday, legislators who had gathered to conduct the day’s business were seen wearing the senior national team, Black Stars, jerseys ahead of the match.
The decision to forego official suits in favor of sportswear was not lost on First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu.
In order to raise morale and spirit, the benches were also draped in national colors.
Despite the fact that the numbers on the floor were insufficient, legislators appeared to be optimistic about the prospects at Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, expressed confidence that “Ghana will emerge victorious.”
The other MPs wished the Black Stars luck in their upcoming match.
Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon, acknowledged the importance of the match in the country’s sporting calendar and urged the players to put their best foot forward.
He urged Ghanaians to support the senior national team.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye, MP for Odododiodio, has urged the team to redeem itself by defeating the Super Eagles.
According to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, nearly half of the Baba Yara stadium’s capacity has already been sold online.
Following the game, the team will travel to Abuja for the second leg at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium four days later.
