In the Ashiaman Municipality, two teenage girls become pregnant every day, with 124 teenage pregnancy cases recorded between January and February of this year.
According to Ms. Theodora Okpojah, Sub-Municipal Head Nurse in Amuidjor in the Ashaiman Municipality, the Municipality recorded a total of 671 teenage pregnancies cases in 2020, with the number rising to 793 in 2021.
According to her, Amuidjor has been identified as the community with the highest number of teenage pregnancy cases, according to municipal statistics.
Ms Okpojah made the remarks at a forum hosted by the Ghana Federation of the Urban Poor (GHAFUP) in collaboration with the United Nations-Habit (UN-Habit) and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) to mark the end of the 2022 International Women’s.
She spoke on the topic of “sexual and reproductive health, teenage pregnancy, and family planning,” highlighting the rising rate of teenage pregnancy in Ashaiman and urging immediate action.
She urged parents and guardians to form relationships with their adolescent children so that they can talk about adolescent sexual development in a safe environment.
As a result, she urged parents and guardians to strengthen their bonds with their adolescent children.
She urged parents to be aware of the types of friends their teenage daughters associate with and to try to educate them about sex education at home.
“If they do not want unwanted pregnancies that may lead to abortion, the best way was to completely abstain from sexual activities, use protection, or walk into a registered hospital for family planning,” Ms Okpojah advised teenage girls and mothers.
