Nigeria’s Tope Awotono has been named one of the world’s most successful African-American tech entrepreneurs by Forbes. This comes after his success as the founder and CEO of Calendly, a $3 billion meeting scheduling software. According to rumors, the 40-year-father old’s was killed in Lagos by daredevil armed robbers.
Tope Awotono, whose father was murdered by armed thieves in the busy city of Lagos, has been named a billionaire by Forbes. When the crooks wanted to kidnap their car, the child Awotona was alleged to have witnessed his father’s murder.
Calendly, a $3 billion meeting scheduling platform, is founded and led by Awotona, who is 40 years old.
According to the magazine, Awotona was born into a middle-class family in Lagos, Nigeria. His father was a microbiologist and business owner, while his mother worked at the Lagos Central Bank.
He relocated to Atlanta with his family when he was 15 years old, in 1996. At the University of Georgia, he studied computer science before moving on to business and management information. Tope could be the most successful African-American software entrepreneur of his generation, according to David Cummings, founder of Atlanta Ventures, which led a $550,000 seed investment in Calendly seven years ago.
