Ronaldo’s second hat-trick in five games gilded another lackluster United effort, but the Red Devils’ chances of finishing in the top four were boosted by Arsenal and Tottenham’s defeats.
Kieran Dowell headed Teemu Pukki’s cross past David De Gea on the stroke of halftime, and the Finnish striker avoided the offside trap to tie the game seven minutes later.
On an afternoon when the pre-match preparations had been overshadowed by widespread protests outside the ground against the Glazer ownership, Ronaldo restored the hosts’ good feeling with a 25-yard thunderbolt free-kick winner that caught out Tim Krul (76) and put the hosts right back in contention for fourth place.
Norwich are seven points out of safety with six games remaining, and their chances of surviving continue to dwindle.
