Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Member of Parliament for Sekondi, says the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is unconcerned with the recent EIU research, which predicts a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections.
Mr. Egyapa Mercer, speaking on Citi TV’s The Big Issue, noted that the NPP has had to deal with a lot of external “distractions,” which is why it looks to be functioning poorly.
He is certain, though, that the “political atmosphere” will shift by the time the party implements all of its plans and projects.
“We’re not scared in the least. This country’s good citizens are rational and reasonable.
They are aware of the concerns. If we analyze the economy’s performance prior to the banking sector’s clean-up, we did quite well. Every Ghanaian could see that the country was moving in the right direction. Then Covid came along and added to our woes. Fast forward to 2021, and our GDP growth has improved slightly. In 2022, there are concerns about the budget’s passing, our economy’s downgrade, and the impact on currency rates.”
Then there’s the Ukraine-Russia confrontation. The Ghanaian understands that the NDC is no match for the NPP if all of these external reasons are removed.”
“The EIU study mentioned infrastructure projects, and we all know how long they take. When the infrastructure projects are finished in 2024, efforts like YouStart will kick in to complement all other government interventions, the 1D1F projects will be completed, and unemployment will be reduced. There will be no problems by the time anti-corruption institutions are recognized to be effectively dealing with corrupt officials.”
“I am confident that by 2024, the economy will have completely recovered, and the good people of this nation will analyze both administrations’ performance and make the correct decision by re-endorsing us.”
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a London-based economic and political research firm, has predicted that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win the next general elections in 2024.
The EIU, on the other hand, has advised that the party seeks a new presidential candidate in addition to former President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Mahama, who led the NDC to two election setbacks in 2016 and 2020, should be replaced to re-energize the party and strengthen its prospects, according to the report.
