Nigeria’s central bank governor’s presidential campaign poses a serious threat to the country’s ailing economy.
This was expressed by Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in response to the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, running for president.
President Muhammadu Buhari has threatened to dismiss Emefiele unless he resigns as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Following his rumored interest in the 2023 presidential race, numerous interest groups have called for Emefiele’s resignation as CBN Governor.
Several interest groups have asked the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to throw his hat in the ring and run for President in their public campaigns for several weeks.
However, in an apparent response to calls for him to run for president in 2023, Emefiele stated that his priority at the time was to establish a strong monetary policy and combat inflation, which is now a worldwide issue.
The speculation around Emefiele’s alleged campaign for president in the 2023 general election was finally put to rest when he reportedly paid N100 million for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential nomination and expression of interest form.
According to media sources, the CBN Governor’s aides picked the forms on his behalf around midday in Abuja, and he is anticipated to run on the ruling APC platform.
Many Nigerians, according to Akeredolu, were shocked and dismayed when Emefiele’s proposal was announced. He went on to say that while Emefiele has the constitutional right to join and fully participate in any group or association, “doing so as the CBN governor is blatant.”
“This act, if not addressed promptly, portends significant damage to the country’s weak economy,” Akeredolu added.
“This newest development demonstrates that the Governor, like any other Nigerian with partisan interests, may be interested in wading into the dark waters of politics.”
“It is undeniable that Mr Emefiele has the same constitutionally protected right as any Nigerian to join and participate fully in any club or association.”
“However, it is impossible to envision a person in the lofty and sensitive position of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria being so bold in realizing his objective.” It’s pointless to state the obvious.
“The combined effect of the Public Service Rules, the CBN Act, and the 1999 Constitution, as amended, exposes not only the peculiarity inherent in this brash exercise of claimed right to associate, but also the oddity inherent in this brash exercise of presumed right to associate.”
It also establishes the act’s illegality if he submits the forms while holding the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
“As a result, we advise Mr Emefiele to resign from his position as soon as possible so that he can follow his interests,”
“As a result, we advise Mr Emefiele to quit the office immediately in order to pursue his passion.” He can’t mix political politics with his office’s extremely delicate mission. Should he refuse to resign, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces will be forced to dismiss him immediately.
“This is a far-fetched joke.”
