Actor Gbenga Richards has been reported deceased, another tragedy for Nollywood.
Richards died on Thursday morning following a long battle with an unknown illness.
According to accounts, the once-vibrant actor, who was a force to be reckoned with in the 1990s and early 2000s, suffered from a number of maladies, and getting money for his treatment proved difficult due to his financial difficulties.
Recall that his colleague Emmanuel Ehumadu AKA Labista requested help for the seasoned actor a few months back.
“There are so many experienced Nollywood actors who are dying in silence,” he said on his Instagram page, pleading for donations. They end up in misery and poverty as a result of their efforts to the growth of Nollywood and the nation.
Gbenga Richards requires our assistance. Let’s not wait until he’s dead to put up his photos, write RIP on his wall, and figure out who’s to blame.”
Richards made his acting debut in 1977, when he and Hubert Ogunde represented Nigeria at the Second World Black and African Festival of African Culture (FESTAC).
He also appeared in films such as ‘Sango,’ ‘Mirror in the Sun,’ ‘Betrayal by Love,’ ‘Fighting Machine,’ and many others.
