Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe announced on Sunday that his government is trying to reform the constitution to make the president and cabinet more accountable to parliament.
Due to an extraordinary financial crisis, protests erupted in Sri Lanka, culminating in the resignation of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government this month. Wickremesinghe has promised to address the problems that caused the crisis.
The president will be held accountable to the parliament under the new system we propose. Wickremesinghe remarked in a televised speech to the country that the cabinet of ministers is also accountable to parliament.
