Heung-Min Son fractured the area surrounding his left eye when playing for Seoul against Marseille in the Champions League last week. Son will need surgery, and he insisted that he “won’t miss this for anything.” There were concerns that Son would miss the World Cup with South Korea.
“Hello everyone,” the Tottenham forward posted on Instagram. I just wanted to take a second to express my gratitude for everyone’s supportive words that I have received over the past week. I’ve read a ton of them and I genuinely, sincerely thank you all. You gave me a lot of strength during a trying period. Many young people, including myself, have the desire of representing their nation at the World Cup. I wouldn’t trade this for anything. I’m eager to represent our lovely nation; I’ll see you shortly.
Son underwent surgery last Friday to stabilize a fracture around his left eye that he sustained during Tottenham’s 2-1 Champions League victory against Marseille.
Concerns were expressed in South Korea that their star player would not make the tournament in Qatar, where they will be making their 11th World Cup appearance.
Son, who shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah of Liverpool, scored 23 goals last season to make history as the first Asian player to do so.
When Antonio Conte’s team visited South Korea for preseason in the summer, they were greeted like heroes, which only served to further cement his “God-like” reputation there.
As one of the top players in the competition and at the age of 30, he will certainly experience a similar level of acclaim when he arrives in Qatar.
Son also has a chance to break Ahn Jung-Hwan and Park Ji-three-goal Sung’s record to become the nation’s all-time leading scorer at World Cups, which he can do in Qatar 2022 with just one more goal.
Son, who has scored 35 goals in 104 appearances for South Korea, still needs to score 23 goals more to overtake Cha Bum-Kun as the team’s best scorer.
However, Son’s immediate goal is to guide his team past the group stages for just the third time in their history.
