Celebrities, entertainers, and Nollywood actors seem to have distanced themselves from some of their coworkers’ political aspirations, such as those of Funke Akindele and Tonto Dike.
While Tonto Dike was chosen as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) running partner for governor in Rivers State in the 2023 election, Funke Akindele was chosen as the PDP’s running mate for governor in Lagos State.
When it comes to backing from their peers, both actresses are now on their own despite making a flurry of promises to the people of their States if elected into office as deputy governors.
However, Tonto Dike and Funke Akindele are not the first well-known celebrities to enter politics in an effort to alter the nation’s political narrative.
The list is extensive, but a few names stand out: actors Yul Edochie, Kenneth Okonkwo, Abolore Akande (also known as Nice), Bankole Wellington (also known as Banky W), Desmond Elliot, etc.
Even though individuals like Honourable Desmond Elliot were successful and are currently serving their second terms in the Lagos State House of Assembly, it is fair to assume that he did not receive much support from his Nollywood colleagues before to the election.

“The majority of these performers rely on corporations and politicians for endorsements, and frequently, they are more focused on their own interests. And if they back one of their own, that implies that they will take a stance against the more financially successful opponents.
He claimed that if Funke Akindele weren’t running, “she would probably be supporting Atiku, Tinubu, Peter Obi, or some other party that has the ability to pay them for their endorsement, support, or whatever sort of lobbying they perform for them.
