Busloads of migrants, who had come from the southwest border in Texas, were dumped during the Christmas holiday weekend close to Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington amid bitter cold, immigrant relief organizations reported on Sunday.
According to Tatiana Laborde, general director of SAMU First Response, a relief organization working with the city of Washington, D.C., some 110 to 130 of the migrants seeking refuge in the United States, many of them families with children, were put on buses by Texas authorities.
She stated over the phone that assistance organizations had been made aware of their travel plans and were waiting for them to arrive late on Saturday to distribute blankets before taking them to a church in the Capitol Hill section of the city.
Greg Abbott’s aides were unavailable to comment on whether the state arranged for their transportation.
The Republican governor, who has been a prominent opponent of the Biden administration’s immigration policies, and a few other Republican governors have been sending migrants to Democratic-run cities in the north of the country.
In response to a national discussion over the huge numbers of immigrants entering the country through the southern border, Texas has bused thousands of migrants to Chicago, New York City, and Washington in what some critics have called a spectacle.
Nine busloads of migrants have been dropped off in Washington, according to Laborde, in the last week.
Laborde stated, “Recently, we’ve noticed a rise in persons from Ecuador and Colombia. She stated that several Venezuelans had previously arrived by bus.
Laborde claimed that many of the most recent arrivals are currently trying to travel to New York or New Jersey, where they have family or other community support.
