The Times claims that Chelsea has finally achieved success in their pursuit of Enzo Fernandez of Benfica.
The Blues are now anticipated to break the British transfer record for the World Cup champion from Argentina.
At the beginning of the transfer window, Chelsea was heavily connected with a deal for Fernandez, but negotiations stalled because Benfica said he was not for sale.
Chelsea renewed their interest in the 22-year-old over the weekend, despite Benfica’s objections, and co-owner Todd Boehly of the west London club directly took part in negotiations.
Before the January transfer window closes on Tuesday night, Chelsea said they were prepared to spend more than £100 million to bring the midfielder to Stamford Bridge.
Given that the amount of money looks to have pressed Benfica’s hand, Graham Potter’s team is eager to up their offer to approximately £115 million, which would set a British transfer record.
