Paul Parker, a former Manchester United defender, has encouraged head coach Erik ten Hag to replace midfielder Bruno Fernandes as captain with goalkeeper David de Gea.
Fernandes is not a leader, according to Parker, who also called him a brat and child.
On March 5, when Manchester United lost to Liverpool 7-0 in the Premier League, Fernandes’ attitude came under fire.
In exasperation, the Portugal international committed roughly three fouls after being observed fighting with the match official repeatedly and at times refusing to track back.
“First of all, I’ve been saying Bruno Fernandes shouldn’t have been the captain from day one. He lacks leadership qualities, which is why it took him so long to join a major club like Manchester United, Parker told Apostagolos.
“By claiming that he is the top player, that he is dishing out assists, and other such things, people are trying to shield him. Yet, the truth is that by throwing himself to the ground and criticizing the officials, he has acted naively and petulantly. He’s an oaf.
“He would rather stomp on people while walking around, whine, and give up. He gave up on Liverpool, a terrible team.
David De Gea should lead the team, Parker continued.. He’s acting like a captain and he is actually trying to calm people down.”
