Aisha Ahmad, the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has reportedly been detained by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) in connection with an alleged illegal acquisition of shares in Titan Bank (Union Bank) and Polaris Bank.
According to Peter Afunanya, a spokesman for the DSS, Ahmad is either in their custody or has been requested to be questioned, but he was unable to confirm or deny this to Channels Television on Sunday.
According to circulating rumors, Aisha is also being questioned on how Titan Bank raised $300 million to complete the acquisition of Union Bank in 2022.
Speaking on the development, Afunaya said that any inquiry may involve inviting people to be questioned and that any such invites must be acted upon in accordance with the law.
This occurs around two months after Godwin Emefiele, Ahmad’s former boss at the CBN, was taken into custody by the secret agency. Since then, he has been under the DSS’s custody.
