The goal for Liverpool against Tottenham by Luis Diaz was incorrectly deemed to have been awarded by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The referee was then instructed to abide with the on-field judgment by Darren England, who was working for VAR but was unaware that the goal had been wrongly ruled out for offside. Since then, the PGMOL has issued an apology, alleging that when Diaz’s attempt was disallowed, “a significant human error occurred” and that “this was a clear and obvious factual error” that “should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention.” At first, it was thought that England had neglected to use the on-screen lines to indicate whether a Spurs defender had played Diaz onside.
In a shocking turn of events, it has since come to light that the VAR misread the on-field judgment and believed a goal had been awarded when it hadn’t.
Due to this, even though England knew Diaz was onside, they relayed the message “check complete,” and the goal was scored. Due to a late own goal by Joel Matip, Tottenham went on to upset Liverpool.
